A TIE piece for
young audiences
(years 7 +)
Charting one of the most illustrious
episodes in British
history The
Maharajah and the
Kohinoor follows the
story of Duleep
Singh, Maharajah of
Lahore and King of
the Sikh Empire, who
was deposed by the
British at the age
of eleven and sent
to England. Not only
was he separated
from his mother, but
also from his most
prized possession -
The Kohinoor, the
world’s largest
diamond, taken away
from him to be
included in the
Crown Jewels.
On arriving at the
shores of England
Duleep immediately
became a court
favourite of Queen
Victoria. Encouraged
by Her Majesty, the
ex-Maharajah
established solid
relationships with
the Royal family
over the years.
However, injustices
and insincere
intentions from the
British
establishment
eventually drove him
into the arms of
exploitative
meddlers who offered
allegiance but left
him isolated. He
died penniless and
alone in 1893.
A co-production with
The Drum.
